opinions?
« on: July 29, 2010, 11:18:30 PM »

well i was hoping i would have had time to ask opinions before i bought this used bow, but since i had to make a decision quickly i want opinions on whether i did ok with it.. i got an 06 fred bear instinct for 200 bucks completely set up with hardcase and the extra modules to change the draw length. i dont know alot about compounds but couldnt find anything bad about the bow so whats everyones opinion on them? i mainly needed something a little lighter weight than my old bow it was killin my arthritis and this one is alot smaller.

As long as you are happy and it shoots how you want it is a good deal.  I'm not really into compounds, but I shoot an old High Country once in a while.  Sometimes I hunt with it.  It shoots a lot faster, flatter and harder than my recurve and several ask why I would consider hunting with an antique.  It suits me and I am very happy with it.  It has killed several deer, but it doesn't give you the thrill of harvesting with a traditional outfit.

Enjoy you new bow.

cool, glad to hear the replies, last year was my first year using a compound, always used an old redwing recurve before that, so i dont know much about the quality of compounds, i know some cost a small fortune and some not so much, but nice shooting is about what i'm concerned with and whether it will hold up for a long time as long as its taken care of, and just wasnt sure of the bear brand compounds, mostly ya hear more about hoyt and matthews bows when ya hear someone talking about compounds so am happy for the good replies.

thanks.

l would say you did good.  Like was said before if it does what you want it to do and your happy with it that is all that matters.  From the picture it looks real nice.  I just bought a used Parker Trailblazer XP (2007 model) for $285 and I still had to buy a Copper Johns 3 pin site for it.  Other than the site it was all setup, I just had to get the site and some arrows.

Bear bows have been around for years.  Remember Fred Bear was Mr. Archery.  Their compounds of the 70's and 80's left something to be desired by todays standards, but they have come a long way and have great bows for good prices.  The Hoyt and Matthews, while nice bows and just as good to me as the Bear, your paying more for the name.  Just my opinion, not putting anyone down for owning either.  Heck my son owns a Matthews.  The Parker I bought will replace my Martin Jaguar compound that I have used for about 6 years now.  The Martin will become a back up bow.

Again you did a great job getting a good bow.

I think you done real good , the accesories on that bow would cost easily over a $150,Quiver, stabilizer, braided wrist strap, true glow type of site, limb savers, never shot that model, one cam should draw and shoot pretty well, get it to a bow shop and have  it set up for you, looks like it was takin pretty good care of, you may want to put a new string on it , and have them check the cam and Idler wheel over real good for ya, should make you a good bow for next few years.

thats what i was thinkin about everything that came on it but not too sure about the site pin on it, never used one like it and not sure i'm gonna like it, may see if i can find a decent one to replace it with or trade it for, not sure how much its worth or anything dont figure too much since its used but it only has a single pin that stands from the bottom and a slide on the side to push it up and down to marks you make on a little sticker for your distances, that seems to me like it would just be a pain.

this is whats on it, anyone use this type? is it easier that it seems? yes i'm not too savvy about these things yet..

If your going to replace the site, look at a Copper John's site.  That is what I put on my Parker.  You can get a 3 pin or a 5 pin set.

The one you have is a single pin site and you move the site up or down based upon the yardage.  You mark the yardages when your practicing...like 10, 20 and 30.  Once you have those set then you move it according to the yardage your shooting from.

right and that seems a bit slow to fool with in real time hunting situation but thats just my opinion i would rather have the other pins and just point and shoot.

On my hunting bows I always preferred a single pin sight.  I normally would sight the pin dead on at 25 yards and hold on the deer accordingly.  I have seen a lot of guys over the years make mistakes with their pins when they had multiple pins on their bow.  And if you can hone her in at 25 yards with good accuracy you are great out to 30 yards, and that is as far as I would shoot in a hunting situation.  Tom.
