Help on the Kanawha
« on: July 20, 2010, 12:47:51 AM »

Was wondering if any one could give me some info on the Kanawha,  Will be coming down in early October for a fishing tounament.  What pool is the best bass fishing, what should i be targeting as far as structure and some lures to start off throwing.  Any help would be great i am from central pa and if anyone is coming to pa i would be more than happy to give info.

Congrats on makin this far!!  I would help but it would kinda be like giving the enemy your bullets. .

Seriously, it can be tough to hammer out a limit on it at times.  Most of my friends call me a urbN trash fisher because I like to fish the trash people throw in. Really there is no secret weapon and no great spot.

Understood you must be excited to have the regional on home waters.  I have heard it can be tuff at times.  Does the fishing get any better in the fall.

You didn't mention where you will launching, the Kanawha has many miles of fishable water. The only thing I can relay is that shad migrate up the tribs in massive numbers in the fall. You should be able to take it from there as far as what to throw and where to go. Good luck with your tournament!!!

I have a feeling that it's for the state tour TBF it's on the kanawha this year launching out of C&P. The best place to fish in the fall is the winfield pool that time of year (right truck )

There were several 13 to 16lb bags weighed in this spring and I'm pretty sure the bulk of them came from the Montgomery pool.  Be carefull though, it has some shallow water.  A couple guys I know won two Trail of Dream tourneys there and broke the motor off the transom both times in two different boats.  As for specific locations and baits used...I wish I knew.  Fishing anywhere on the Kanawha for bass has been terrible since May, 5lbs a day will get you a check right now any day of the week.

I fish the Kanawha on a regular basis and since about the 1st of May is has been terrible. I have fished a bunch of tournments on the river and have hardly weighed in a full bag. I have seen 12lbs-14lbs weighed in but it is rare. I have been catching most of my fish on a shad colored crankbait and a pumkinseed gizit. This past weekend, I caught all my fish on a Chart. Spinnerbait. Personally I like the Chelyan Pool, but it does have its shallow spots. So be careful. Hopefully by time you get down here, the water will start cooling down and the bite will pick up. Hope to see ya on the water.

Jody and thomas never caught a good bag out of montgomery this year if thats what they told you there not telling you the truth most of there fish came from marmet pool. Montgomery hasn't been good all year after they started working on the bluestone dam a year ago the bite has slowed down big time for some reason.   I don't know if that has anything to do with it but that the only thing I can think of.

Kanwha has just about everything, most grass it up stream from charleston down stream from charleston don't have a lot of structure but there is some big fish around ramond city or buffalo you just gotta know how to fish it and I don't.  I havn't did real good down in that part of the pool.
I have caught some good fish down there but not many but the guys that know that water always come back with a big sack of fish.
When is the tour ?

I'm thinking that they will be launching put of c&p or Daniel Boone. It is the only places big enought to handle everything.

Grass - upstream and will find more smallies than largemouth

Down stream you will find backwaters and tributaries. A lot of guys that now hot to fish the backwaters bring in some nice ones but you will fish all day for only 5 bites. Really what I would suggest is take a couple days and just check out as much as you can. There is access in every pool so you don't waste all you time locking through.

I know they didn't have a much weight in the Fed tourney, but was almost certain they locked up from what folks were saying.  I assumed that if they did lock up for the Fed tourney that it most likely meant that's where their winning bags had come from.  The fact the 2 boats got thrashed only helped to reinforce that idea because of the shallow water, but it was still just speculation.

All I know for sure is that the river has been tough for me, especially this year.  Not particularly looking forward to the invitational in Sept, but it's too close to home to sit it out seeing as there's no entry fee.
