A few stand reminders
« on: May 20, 2010, 04:56:25 AM »

Well i was out in the woods today cleaning up the rest of the wheeler trails and trimming a few shooting lanes. I personally like to trim lanes as early as possable once the leaves come out for a few reasons one is to make shure you get all the smaller branches you may not see in the fall and also so the deer have plenty of time to get used to it before season comes in. Theres nothing more noticable to a muture deer saying her i am to get you than a fresh cut lane in the middle of hunting season. Also ill be back out this weekend or next week to hang a new stand near a bedding area that i didnt want to disturb last fall after seeing many deer workin the edges during the rut. this is always the best time to do any modifying of stands close to a bedding area or a high traffic area, so they have all summer to get used to everything.

On another note i saw a few defferent bucks but two looked like they had apretty good start on the horn groth they both had the start of brow tines and two big balls where the main beams will strat its still early but its a promising start for the year.

I think you are right by getting it done early.  I am trying to talk a few friends into building a small hunting hut for me near one of my favorite crossings.  Hoping to get it done in the next few weeks.  I have hunted there over the years in my portable ground blind.  But hopefully I can get my little hut built this year.  Tom.

I agree, early summer is the time to trim lanes ect.

One thing to keep in mind is to plan your stand location off of last falls scouting, not spring/summer patterns.  Many times the summer pattern and fall pattern don't put the deer in the same areas.

Hope you get your hut put together HH, they sure make sitting on bad weather days easier.

Great tips.  I haven't put out any trail cams yet but I did see a buck last week that had some thick velvety nubs sticking out of his head.  The main beam hadn't branched yet. I also saw a pile of bear dung in the middle of the road at my spot today so this fall seems promising so far.

I have a lot of work to do on the atv trails and establishing some new stand sites.  However, I am in the middle of a bathroom remodel that is monopolizing all my time.  I can't wait to get out there in the brush.

I was out this evening and doubble checked two atands just to make shure everything was good to go before season gets here. Im going to get in the rest of them this weekend just for one last look just incase some thing needs to be cut or trimmed.  Summer is going buy pretty quick and it will be fall in no time.
