Depends on the pressure in your area.  I watched a 6 point come in as a spike was grunting like crazy chasing a few years ago.  I have also grunted in a few bucks but never a shooter.  I have had better luck with a grunt during gun season, the can I use mostly in bow season to bring a buck in that last few yards.  With a rifle I'm not worried about that last 10 yards.  Wink

But, if you are hunting an area that is getting lots of hunting pressure the calls probably aren't going to be as effective.  We stand hunt mostly so deer aren't getting moved out of there normal patterns as much so calls are more effective.

5 Of my best gun shooters came from rattling 4 the first week1 the second. 3 To snort wees and tending grunt the second week.2 others came doe calls the first week.4 To doecalls the second.
I call every time I go to the woods. You just never know.As said before pressure has a great deal to do with it.Along withbuck doe ratio and age structure. But bucks responed to deer calls very well in all of NOV. and DEC. but not as well in DEC.

ALL of these years of hunting I have never used a call, but I am going to go afield this year with a grunt call and we will see how things go.  Even if I can't call one in and can use it to stop one in its tracks thats on the move long enough to hold the crosshairs on it will be fine with me.

question:

if a buck is hot on a doe chasing her all over...will he react to a grunt call or not? i have never called before so i have many questions. I do believe i heard some bucks grunting today. that was a first for me  Grin

Every buck is diffrent, one might react to it and another may pay no attention to it at all.Imo it never hurts to try it!!

I've deer hunted for 40 years 32 of those years I've used  calls. My first year of calling I called up or saw 13 bucks.Uselly I was like most hunters if I saw 1 or 2 bucks a year. That was my hunting season. Each year my number got higher and peaked in 05 when I called up or saw 55 bucks lots were the same bucks.Because I hunted the same farms.I did'nt get to hunt in 06 or 07 I had 2 strokes. But I recover enough that I grunted in and killed a small 6 point off the  ground at 4 yards with one of my self bows.He was like a 12 pointer to me.I always said GOD  must have scent him to me.I was happy just to be there.I'm still getting better still  get dizzy when I look up or been over to long. Can;t walk in the dark if I can't see the ground.
I called up 4 bucks that year.So far this year I've hunted 31 times and saw 13 bucks so far.The shooters but no shots at them yet.I quit gun hunting  an stand hunting in 04 and my strokes sealed the deal on stands.Still lots of time left all of the farms I hunt are bow only or I'm the only one hunts them.So if the gun hunters on the surrounding farms leave me a few.I'll be back out there THANKSGIVING.
Could not even thing of not taking my calls and horns hunting with me.WVHUNTER good luck I'm sure that grunt will help you out.Remeber use it alot don't be scared to call loud.Do it often to catch bucks moving past.Bucks can only here it about 10 to 20 yards futher than you can about 70 to 80 yards[calls].Do it often to catch bucks moving past.Good luck.

I forgot to take my can with me yesterday man I was ticked off.

I kept thinking that a buck was just out of sight in the thick stuff but withing hearing. And I couldn't draw him out!

I called in several bucks with "The Can" by Primos!

I would have been also HUNTENFOOL.My can and other doe calls never left my pack sence the came out back in late 80's I think I can't remember. The further you get into NOV. the better it works.Use it with a tending grunt or a snort wee's its deadly on bucks going into or into the rut.And use it a lot.I use mine every 10 min's.
I also use it durning the second rut withgood results.Remeber pressure, buck doe ratio and your buck age struckure all are major factors in calling. But when it happens it's nothing like calling.

JROD not likely he's got what he wants. He dos'nt want to here or see any other bucks that will make him  take his doe away.If call all you'll do is let him know your there. He'll thinks your a buck and hurry his doe away. I hardly ever call if I can see the buck. He'll pin point you he may not see you but if he can't see the other deer he'll hold up.
I let him get out of sight then call him back. This way he dos'nt pin point where your callling from.
Sorry getting back what dose happen is his totall attent is on the doe.But remember the doe's is still alert. But even if you don't get a shot her trail is stiil there.Stay there other bucks will likely find it.
The only way he may come is if he's the domant buck of the area and use a young buck grunt. He may break off and come over to kick your #@@.If you have no shot you got to try.I would, you got nothing to use.Her trails still there for other bucks to follow.

Not to change the subject but do you think it will still work if the buck/doe ratio is outta wack.  Most areas close to home have way more does than bucks.  Ive rattled a few in around home and that is with years of hunting.  I never even carry calls nemore.  If the can would still work I may give it a try though.
